One of the many benefits of choosing a celebrant-led wedding ceremony is the freedom you have to include any type of music you like — from classical to country, R&B to rock, or even death metal if that’s your vibe!
As a celebrant, I’ve witnessed first-hand just how beautifully music enhances a ceremony. Whether you’re going for tears, goosebumps, or toe-tapping joy, your choice of wedding music can transform the entire feel of your big moment. Here are some key musical moments to consider — along with a few creative ideas to make them truly yours.
1. Wedding Music While Guests Are Waiting
The ceremony begins before you walk down the aisle. As your guests arrive and take their seats, the atmosphere is already building. Background music during this time helps to set the tone — romantic, relaxed, dramatic, or upbeat.
Think about choosing a playlist that reflects you both as a couple. If you want a peaceful, elegant feel, consider acoustic versions of your favourite songs, or classical arrangements. If you’re more into indie rock, jazz, or even instrumental movie scores, go for it! With a celebrant-led ceremony, you’re not restricted to instrumental-only music — lyrics are welcome here.
If you have a musician friend or family member, this could also be a wonderful moment for a bit of live music to greet your guests as they arrive – string quartets are particularly popular.

With a celebrant-led ceremony, there are no rules. I’ve had couples walk in to acoustic covers of Beyoncé, dramatic Hans Zimmer scores, vintage swing tunes, and yes — even heavy metal! One bride made her entrance to a stripped-back piano version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” — and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
Don’t forget, your wedding party can also have their own processional music, or you can all walk in to the same piece. It’s your choice!
3. Signing the Certificate
While the certificate signing might be short, it’s still a lovely opportunity to include some soft, reflective wedding music. Guests will usually be watching quietly during this moment, so instrumental pieces work really well — but again, there are no restrictions.
This is also a great opportunity for a musical interlude. Do you have a talented friend or relative who could sing or play a song live? Perhaps something romantic, meaningful, or even a bit quirky to reflect your personalities?
One couple I worked with had a friend play a soulful saxophone piece during the signing, and it gave everyone a moment to just breathe, relax, and soak up the atmosphere.
4. Walking Back Down the Aisle (Recessional)
Time to celebrate! The music you choose for your exit should be joyful and uplifting — it marks the moment you are officially married and ready to start your next chapter together.
Many couples opt for something lively and upbeat here. Think Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” or even something funky or unexpected to surprise your guests. One of my couples made their exit to “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC — and it was an absolute crowd-pleaser!
Bonus Idea: A Guest Singalong or Musical Moment
Want to get your guests involved in the music? Why not have a singalong! Yes, really! If you’re the kind of couple who likes a bit of fun and connection, inviting everyone to sing a simple chorus or well-loved song can be magical.
This could be led by a guest musician, choir, or even just played over a speaker with lyrics printed in your order of ceremony. Imagine everyone singing along to “All You Need Is Love” or “Stand By Me” — it’s joyful, inclusive, and unforgettable.
